World Information: At the beginning of everything was the One. When life began, Powers came into being with it and then assisted in the universe's creation. However, one of the greater Powers bid their time as the Others worked. That Power wanted to contributed something unique to creations, and thus It made death. This lead to the others casing It out, marking It as the Lone Power. Since then the Lone Power has scorned life and seeks to spread entropy throughout the worlds.
Given how much energy they used to create the universe, the others Powers are limited in what they can do to stop the Lone Power. This is where wizards come into play.
Wizards are people who are given power by the One to affect change around them. They take an Oath in the service of Life, to protect and preserve it as best they can. The end goal is that by constantly challenging entropy in both big and small ways, wizards might slow the death of the universe long enough to make a lasting change.
Wizardry is enacted through the Speech, a language that makes up the basis for everything. When spoken, the Speech sounds like any living thing's native tongue but with deeper undertones. Using the Speech allows wizards to make requests of every day items or even tweak at the structure of spacetime. So long as you know what words to use, the possibilities are endless. This is why all wizards are given a manual. This wizard manual is a conglomerate of all information that the wizarding community currently knows or needs to know.
Wizards of any species start in their latency period (pre-teen to teen years for humans). After taking the Oath, they are given a challenge called their Ordeal to test their commitment. Once their Ordeal is passed, a wizard continues to work on errands assigned to them by the Powers that Be for the rest of their lives.
Personal History: Dairine is the youngest in the Callahan family. Her parents are Harry and Betty Callahan. She also has an older sister named Nita. Dairine cares a lot about her sister, and sometimes Nita has been her only friend.
At a very young age, Dairine had already realized that the world was a dangerous place. Other kids would make fun of her and her sister. When she saw her big sister crying after school, three year old Dairine concluded that the only way to stop the world from hurting you was to know everything. Dairine was already a quick learner, so she taught herself to be more perceptive. By age four she had taught herself to read and was devouring all reading material she could get her hands on.
Once in school, Dairine struggled with boredom and social challenges. She got beaten up fairly often until her parents signed her up for jujitsu classes. Bullies quickly learned a painful lesson, and Dairine gained a fearsome reputation among her peers. She used this fear to her advantage in order to get her other classmates to leave her alone.
Later on, Dairine discovers Star Wars and becomes obsessed. She longs for a power like the Force, which would provide the knowledge she needs to never be hurt again.
One day, she sees her sister use a spell on a potential bully. No one but her seems to notice. Dairine becomes determined to find out what is going on. Watching and waiting, she gets her opportunity when she catches Nita changing back from being a humpback whale while on vacation. She distracts their parents in exchange for answers. This is when she finds out about wizardry. World changing power now seems just within her reach, but the Powers that Be must offer it. Dairine can't stand it.
Soon after, she sneaks into Nita's room and uses her manual to take the Wizard's Oath. The next day, her own manual arrives at the house in the form of the new family computer. It is fitting, as she was already interested in advanced programming. That day she dives headlong into her Ordeal, running off on her own space adventure. Dairine quickly realizes that she is in way over her head and looks for a place to figure out this wizardry stuff before the Lone One catches her. This leads her to the Motherboard, a planet-sized computer at the very edges of the universe. There she teaches the Motherboard everything her manual knows, creates her own species of sentient computers, and stops them from putting the universe in stasis indefinitely. In the process, Dairine connects directly to the Motherboard and starts processing data like a computer herself. This helps her defeat the Lone Power in a standoff battle and allows her to offer It a chance to redeem Itself.
With her Ordeal passed, Dairine starts taking more errands. This is probably the busiest time in her wizarding career. As a younger and thus more powerful wizard, Dairine becomes highly sought after for big projects. She has so much power she doesn't even need to worry about the cost of spells. It also gives her a decent amount of fame among wizards.
In autumn, Dairine's power levels start dropping quickly. At the same time, her mother ends up hospitalized with a life threatening illness. Despite her best attempts, Dairine can't do anything to help. She is stuck watching as her sister attempts to save their mother.
Despite Nita buying her time, Betty Callahan still dies. The death devastates Dairine. She starts acting out, skipping school, and retreating from everyone. Underneath it all, Dairine has lost confidence in herself and her abilities as a wizard. Thanks to her family's help, she slowly starts to recover. Dairine changes to a better therapist and promises to stop skipping school.
In an attempt to help heal, Dairine signs up Nita and herself for a galactic cultural exchange. However, she doesn't tell her father or wizard advisors of this plan, so the Powers that Be ground her. She is stuck in the Sol system, helping her dad take care of the visiting wizards. Dairine has trouble getting along with one of her guests, a prince named Roshaun. When Earth suddenly is in danger of being engulfed by the sun, Dairine works in a team for the first time to solve the problem. The crisis pushes Dairine past her initial opinion of Roshaun. They gain mutual respect for each other and become close friends.
Near the end of the exchange program, another threat emerges. Newly discovered dark matter is pushing the universe apart with devastating affects. Young wizards have to step up as the Seniors start to lose their powers to the expansion. Dairine travels with Roshaun to the Motherboard planet to look for a solution. She later reunites with the rest of the group as they go save a newly born Power and the rest of the universe. During the final battle Roshaun disappears in the middle of a spell, leaving Dairine with a heap of survivors guilt. She tells Roshaun's parents of their loss, only to find out through a dream that he isn't dead.
Dairine swears to find her friend. She starts taking lessons with Roshaun's father to learn more about working with stars in hopes that it will help. Her focus on this goal is so unrelenting that she starts skipping school again as summer vacation draws close. This gets her in trouble with her father. Dairine reluctantly lets Nita to give their dad an information feed on her whereabouts in order to keep searching for Roshaun.
Personality: Dairine has a strong personality that seems difficult to approach at first. As a younger sibling, she is a certified brat and proud of it. She's brazen, tough, snarky, and has a bit of an edge to her. Her drive when she sets her sights on a goal can feel relentless. However, she is also incredibly stubborn when pushed towards something she doesn't want to do. On top of that, she is impatient and quickly annoyed. Her attitude can run hot with anger or cold with dripping, sarcastic threats. Dairine tends to wear her temper on her sleeve, outright advertising her foul moods. A person might assume she was actively trying to push them away. They would be half right.
This moody temper serves as a mask for her to hide her feelings of vulnerability. She's spent much of her childhood internalizing any weaknesses to avoid being targeted even more by bullies. As a result, she's a bit of an emotional mess. Dairine is exceptionally hard on herself. She hates feeling helpless or powerless. Dairine takes it poorly when she can't act or fix things, even things that aren't her call, like her mother's health. It makes her feel like she's failed on some fundamental level. She's impatient with the world but also with herself. Most of all, Dairine has a hard time being honest about what she's really feeling. It takes a lot of trust to get her to admit anything is wrong.
Underneath it all, she really wants to do good. Dairine has a soft heart that she's guarded for her whole life. She cares so much for her family and friends. While it has been hard for her to make friends, once you've reached that level she becomes extremely ride-or-die. Dairine is fiercely protective and loyal to people she likes.
Being a wizard has helped her mature to a slightly more well-rounded person. She likes making positive changes, even if the process can be frustrating. Wizardry has helped her socialize and expand her worldview to many galaxy's over. There's still a lot of room for progress. She is still easily stressed and that's when her personality becomes more prickly. However, Dairine is more bark than bite these days. She has much better perspective on what matters.
CRAU developments: Dairine is still very much herself after her visit to Cair Paradisa. However, the time spent there has jaded her a bit. She has made many friends only to see them move on. Plus she was the only wizard there for so long, which was quite lonely without any form of contact. Dairine feels extremely tired and frustrated with adults underestimating her as a kid when she's done so much to help the universe back home. There were some traumatizing events, such as when someone got shot trying to protect her, which increased her guilt and self-doubts.
She also learned archery.
Key themes: Taking responsibility is hard but good. You can still grow, even if you think your best years are behind you.
Main Motivation: Making a positive difference in the universe.
Skills:As a wizard, Dairine can perform all kinds of spells. This is limited by her current power level, the amount of energy required, and how risky it would be over the reward. (For example: she
could force some kind of mind control, but it only last a short time, cost her severely, and would risk disciplinary action if the Powers deemed it improper use of her wizardry.) Her specialties are currently nonorganic lifeforms, space travel, computers, and most recently stars.
Dairine is remarkably clever and has a keen eye for perception. Sometimes this serves her well. Sometimes her intelligence causes her and those around her grief.
She can also fight rather well for someone her size. Although she is scrawny and a little short for her age, Dairine is nimble and quick on her feet. Paired with her training in jujitsu, she can surprise most who underestimate her.
Item:Her wizard manual: Spot. In Spot's case, the manual looks like an Apple notebook, but without the bite in the logo. Spot can grow legs and move around, so he is a little like a pet for her at times. That said, Spot will likely stay incognito around new people until Dairine feels more comfortable.
Sample: Test Drive MemeNotes:Dairine will at least try to talk to things using the Speech, including the train. Silence is completely possible, as well as her noticing a speech but not being able to understand it. Either one will make her concerned and possibly more convinced that nefarious things are behind this.
She will also be an absolute grump over not being able to transit spell herself off the train.
